{"id":615,"date":"2010-08-01T03:02:18","date_gmt":"2010-08-01T03:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/smithrebellion1765.com\/?page_id=615"},"modified":"2010-08-05T12:11:41","modified_gmt":"2010-08-05T12:11:41","slug":"song-by-george-campbell-1765","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/smithrebellion1765.com\/?page_id=615","title":{"rendered":"Song by George Campbell c.1760s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Ye patriot souls who love to sing,<br \/>\nWhat serves your country and your king,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In wealth, peace, any royal estates,<br \/>\nAttention give whilst I rehearse,<br \/>\nA modern fact, in jingling verse,<br \/>\nHow party interest strove what it cou&#8217;d,<br \/>\nTo profit itself by public blood,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But, justly met its merited fate.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Let all those Indian traders claim,<br \/>\nTheir just reward, inglorious fame,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For vile base and treacherous ends.<br \/>\nTo Pollins, in the spring they sent,<br \/>\nMuch warlike stores, with an intent<br \/>\nTo carry them to our barbarous foes,<br \/>\nExpecting that no-body dare oppose,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A present to their Indian friends.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Astonish&#8217;d at the wild design,<br \/>\nFrontier inhabitants combin&#8217;d<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 With brave souls, to stop their career,<br \/>\nAlthough some men apostatiz&#8217;d,<br \/>\nThe bold frontiers they bravely stood,<br \/>\nTo act for their King and their country&#8217;s good,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In joint league, and strangers to fear.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On March the fifth, in sixty-five,<br \/>\nTheir Indian presents did arrive,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In long pomp and cavalcade,<br \/>\nNear Sidelong Hill, where in disguise,<br \/>\nSome patriots did their train surprise,<br \/>\nAnd quick as lightning tumbled their loads,<br \/>\nAnd kindled them bonfires in the woods,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And mostly burnt their whole brigade.<br \/>\nAt Loudon, when they heard the news,<br \/>\nThey scarcely knew which way to choose,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For blind rage and discontent;<br \/>\nAt length some soldiers they sent out,<br \/>\nWith guides for to conduct the route,<br \/>\nAnd seized some men that were trav&#8217;ling there,<br \/>\nAnd hurried them into Loudon where<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They laid them fast with one consent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But men of resolution thought,<br \/>\nToo much to see their neighbors caught,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For no crime but false surmise;<br \/>\nForthwith they join&#8217;d a warlike band,<br \/>\nAnd march&#8217;d to Loudon out of hand,<br \/>\nAnd kept the jailors pris&#8217;ners there,<br \/>\nUntil our friends enlarged were,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Without fraud or any disguise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Let mankind censure or commend,<br \/>\nThis rash performance in the end,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then both sides will find their account.<br \/>\n&#8216;Tis true no law can justify,<br \/>\nTo burn our neighbors property,<br \/>\nBut when this property is design&#8217;d<br \/>\nTo serve the enemies of mankind,<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s high treason in the amount.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Written by George Campbell, (an Irish gentleman\u00a0who had been educated in Dublin) and frequently sung to the tune of the &#8220;Black Joke&#8221;.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>An\u00a0Account of the Remarkable Occurrences in the Life and Travels of Col.
